What Does High CRI Mean
Extended CRI is the average of the R1 to R15 indices. In particular, it takes certain saturated colors into account, such as deep red and deep blue, that the general CRI (Ra) does not consider. Therefore, it is important to check certain Ri numbers in the extended CRI, such as R9 and R12 which represent two significant colors for film/video and medical lighting. Thus, when talking about the color rendering index, the definition of high CRI varies, and it is better to begin comparisons with the general CRI (Ra) but emphasize specific Ri numbers in Extended CRI (Re).
What Does High CRI Mean
CRI has been challenged because fidelity to reference illuminants such as CCT is not all that measures the quality of illumination. Various CCTs are preferred, and scoring 100 at one CCT does not imply equal illumination quality as scoring 100 at another CCT. The "warmer" light colors , such as a 2700 K incandescent bulb or a 1700 K candlelight, are more easily reproduced than more neutral white lights, such as 4800 K direct sunlight, and thus usually have higher CRI ratings in alternative light sources such as CFL and LED bulbs; "warmer" light (redder) naturally renders colors less accurately. Think of how the world looks at sunset (2000 K) compared to high noon (5600 K).

Just because a light source has a high CRI score does not mean it is better for growing plants, however. A light source can have an excellent CRI but lack wavelengths of light that plants most-efficiently use for photosynthesis. High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lights, long used as grow lights, have a very low CRI of 24- so just because the CRI score is low does not mean that the light isn't a good grow light either. This makes CRI fairly meaningless for evaluating how well a light will grow plants.
Because Black Dog LED lights do not have a CCT (color temperature), it is technically impossible to calculate a CRI for our lights, as they cannot be compared to an "ideal" light source with the same CCT. Just because our lights do not have a CRI (or CCT) does not mean that it is difficult to see colors or discern between colors under our light; since our lights' spectrum is continuous, it is easy to see subtle variations in color when working under our lights. However, as our spectrum has more blue and red compared to other colors, the blue-ness or red-ness of objects viewed under our lights may be slightly exaggerated.
The scale ranges from 0 to 100, with 0 meaning the light doesn't show colours matching sunlight. At the opposite end of the scale, a 100 means under the artificial light, the hue looks exactly how it would under sunlight.

Whether it be product photography, hospital work, or managing a retail store, having a good coloring rendering index (CRI) means colors will look more vibrant which helps assess your work. Like color temperature, CRI is overlooked when it comes to LED light shopping. So here are three questions to help you understand what a color rendering index is.
Depending on how you use your flashlight, CRI may be of very great or very little significance to you. A flashlight used primarily to spot things at distance or quickly light up a dark room or hiking trail won't benefit as much from having high CRI as a flashlight used in the medical field or for first aid, for example. In medicine, small differences in the color of tissue can mean big things when it comes to diagnosis and treatment. In first aid, being able to see the true color of someone's lips, nailbeds, etc., can similarly affect treatment decisions.
Work and hobbies are other areas where high CRI can make all the difference. Trying to determine the proper paint color for a project in less-than-ideal lighting? A high CRI light is a must. Checking on the health of your garden after the sun goes down? Again, high CRI is what you're looking for. How about making sure your vehicle's fluids are all the right color when performing maintenance tasks after dark? The higher the CRI of your flashlight, the higher your confidence will be.
The difference between 80 and 90 CRI is a very noticeable jump in color rendition, and it will immediately provide a nice boost in color clarity. An EDC-sized flashlight producing light at 90 CRI or higher isn't common, but our new i5R HCRI does just that!
The color rendering index (CRI) of a flashlight is the measure of the light's ability to reveal an object's true colors, or rather what a user would see when using a natural light source. In other words, the color rendering index is a measure of the quality of the output, where the higher the number the more accurate the colors are represented. A high CRI flashlight is one that produces a more natural-looking output. The highest possible CRI rating is 100, which would only be given if the output matches natural lighting. Blackbody radiation is often used as an example of a light source with a perfect 100 rating. Most LED bulbs deliver a CRI rating at or around 80. High CRI flashlights typically deliver a rating above 90.

Note that CRI is not the same as color temperature. Color temperature, measured in units of Kelvins, describes the color a light emits. Lower temperature leads to warmer yellow tones that are like an incandescent bulb. Higher temperature leads to cooler, more blue tones that are closer to daylight. But you can have high-CRI lights that render proper colors across this color spectrum. Also, a light that says it is 'daylight' or 'neutral' balanced doesn't guarantee that it's a high-CRI light.

ANSI FL1 standards: The runtime is measured until the light drops to 10% of its initial output (30 seconds after turning on). This does not mean that the flashlight is not usable anymore. The last column shows how long the light actually works till it shuts off. If there is a + symbol, it means that the test was stopped at that particular point, but the light was actually still running.
